Project/Program Overview
The Mechanical Engineer, as part of the Platforms Engineering team, is responsible for designing, integrating, and qualifying communication system installations in a variety of platforms (such as the vehicle, static and soldier platforms). The Platforms team works closely with System Engineering and other specialty groups to implement communication systems in platforms for a variety of customers including the department of the national defense (DND). The Platforms team is comprised of system designers (Platforms System Engineers) and system integration / qualification verification (Platforms SI/QV) personnel. The Platforms System Engineers are responsible for the design of the system, whereas the Platforms SI/QV deal with the implementation and qualification of the system.
Responsibilities:
As a member of the Mechanical Engineering Team, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for installation designs of C4ISR systems into military land platforms. The main duties of the Intermediate Mechanical Engineer include:
- Contributes to the production of mechanical designs and drawings mechanical systems for use in rugged environments using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
- Support the full design life cycle from requirements definition, concept through to successful production ramp-up, including support for prototype procurement, assembly, design verification and qualification testing, and on-going manufacturing support.
- Review part and assembly drawings and parts lists in support of the release of design activities.
- Understand the limits and the appropriate application of stress, dynamic and fatigue analysis applicable to equipment installation designs into military land based vehicles. Capable of interpreting results and recommending design changes based on analysis results. Capable of performing analyses and/or working with other engineers to achieve analysis results.
- Through the application of Engineering expertise and analysis, guide designers to ensure mechanical designs are optimized for manufacturability, weight and cost.
- Perform engineering tests such as, vibration and shock testing, for both qualification and design verification testing. Design mechanical tests and test fixtures. Document and analyze results. Write formal test reports.
- Work closely with other design professionals, systems engineers, Supply chain management personnel, and manufacturing engineers to ensure a smooth flow of information throughout a project.
- Perform 3D scanning and process data in support of the vehicle platform design.
- Perform vehicle cable routing per Company Standards
- Define mechanical and environmental design requirements for input into equipment and system specifications, using information in various commercial and military standards.
- Requirements management – review, derive, and verify mechanical and environmental requirements for the mechanical design team. Guide designers and review designs and drawings for compliance of requirements.
- Responsible for the successful completion of project goals according to General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada (GDMS-C) standard processes and procedures.
- Support Program management in the creation of reports for technical reviews and task process.
- Travel to Department of National Defence (DND) locations in Canada to review vehicles for installation design, AND to install the final design for system qualification and verification.
Education/Training: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Applied Science or its equivalent related technical/scientific degree.
Experience:
- 3-5 years of related experience
- Able to apply problem solving skills to daily activities
- Strong communications abilities, both written and verbal.
- Familiarity with the following areas:
- Design for vibration and shock environments.
- Design for harsh climatic environments, corrosive environments.
- Design of sheet metal, machined and welded parts.
- Finite element analysis: structural, dynamic and fatigue.
- Familiarity with Siemens NX or other comparable computer aided design (CAD) software.
- Familiarity to Commercial or Military specifications.
- Familiarity with ASME drafting standards.
